When to Replace Tyres?
Tyres should be replaced when tread is too shallow, rubber is damaged or aged, or performance drops in wet weather. Australian rules generally require at least 1.5 mm tread depth across the central three-quarters of the pattern around the entire circumference — but replacing earlier is safer.
Tread depth
Use a depth gauge or wear bars moulded into the grooves. Many drivers replace at 3 mm for wet-weather margin, especially in high-rain regions.
Damage and repairs
Sidewall bulges, deep cuts, or punctures outside the repairable tread zone mean replacement. Do not patch and continue on a compromised sidewall.
Age and cracking
Even with tread left, ozone and UV crack rubber. Fine crazing in the grooves may be acceptable; deep sidewall cracks are not. See our guide on tyre age.
Pro tip
If one tyre fails and siblings are worn past 50%, consider replacing the pair on that axle for stable handling.
